 2018 Preview

W.S. Neal completed the 2017 season with a 6-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region one, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. W.S. Neal reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Alabama Christian by a score of 38-7.

Since 2010, W.S. Neal has gone a combined 39-47. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, W.S. Neal has managed to compile a record of 138-123. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 4A and 157th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles are led by head coach Andro Williams who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-6 record in his first season at W.S. Neal. The Eagles saw improvement from a 3-7 record the season before coach Williams arrived. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Williams.

Coach Williams' overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 116-29 (80.0%). His 116 wins rank 44th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Williams' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times and won five region championships.

The W.S. Neal Eagles will play in Class 4A region one during the 2018 season. The Eagles have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 71-38 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 4A and 11th in the AHSAA. W.S. Neal will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

Region one will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Eagles could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season.

Unfortunately, W.S. Neal plays in a region with the likes of Andalusia, Clarke County, Hillcrest Evergreen and UMS-Wright making it more difficult to claim one of the four playoff spots. The Eagles will need to find a way to upset one of those teams and win another three region games to have any chance at the post season.

The Eagles open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Satsuma on Friday, August 31 at Buddy Taylor Field. Last year the Satsuma Gators finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 4A region one. The Gators ended last season on a positive note with a win over Chickasaw by a score of 44-7 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

W.S. Neal and Satsuma have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 3-3-0 record against the Gators. They last met in 2017 with W.S. Neal winning by a score of 41-32.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
